The deep meaning of "compensate" is probably very close to balance in English.
You can often use it to mean "offset" or "counterbalance".
Or even to make a satisfactory reparation or payment to someone who's lost something.
It comes from a Latin word for "to weigh".
compensateの深い意味は、英語ではbalanceにとても近いですね。
相殺する、とかいう意味によく使います。
あるいは、何かを失った人に対して、手厚く保障するとかですね。
もともとは「量る」という意味のラテン語に由来します。

Hello and welcome to the show. This is Chris Matsushita. Let's take a look at conversation at work.
こんにちは。番組にようこそ。クリス松下です。実践的な会話を見てみましょう。

Kinkaid relates to her most recent trouble travel. And the team joins in.
Kinkaidさんは、いちばん最近のやっかいな旅行について話します。そしてチームのみんなが加わります。


Shiga adds the word "Exactly" to his question "what happened?"
It makes it sound a little bit more like he really wants the details, although he could have just said,
"What happened?"
志賀さんは、自分の質問文にexactlyをつけています。
ほんとうに詳細が知りたかったのでしょうね。もちろん、What happned?とだけ言ってもよかったですけど。



In this case, the word "grounded" makes very literal sense. The planes had to stay on the ground.
But "grounded" is also used as a kind of punishment.
It has a broader meaning that says you have to stay where you are, not that you can't take off.
So often in the U.S., a parent will punish their kid usually older kids, like teenagers,
by telling them they're grounded.
They can't go out of the house. They can't do anything fun or special.
They can only go to school.
この場合、groundedは、文字通りの感覚ですね。飛行機は足止めされたわけです。
でも、groundedは、ある種、罰としても使われます。
意味が広いのです。つまり、今いるところにとどまっていなきゃならない、という意味です。出かけられないのです。
だから、アメリカでは、親が特にティーネージャーに対しての罰にしますね。
groundeって言ってね。
家から出られません。楽しいことや特別なことができません。学校には通えますけど。

I think everybody knows there's five of them.
みなさん、五つの湖だということはご存じでしょう。

"Some", of course, means not all but more than none.
But another way to use "some" is as an intensifier.
It has pretty much the same meaning as "remarkable" or "remarkably".
someの意味はもちろん、少しはある、ということですが。
このsomeには強勢の意味もあります。
remarkableやremarkablyとかなり似ています。

A cove is actually a fairly small and rather sheltered inlet or bay.
So massive tankers were probably not actually in coves.
But choosing the word "cove" makes it sound nice and cozy and safe.
coveは実際には、とても小さな覆いのある入り江のことです。
だから、巨大なタンカーは実際には入らなかったでしょうね。
でも、このcoveという語を使うと、ステキで居心地がよくて安全な含みがでるんです。

when the worse comes to the worst 最悪の場合には

Flight to nowhere.
You can say something to nowhere to describe something that you think is useless.
It doesn't even actually have to be some kind of transportation or something that moves you.
I checked on the internet, You can find all kinds of things.
For example, the fuel to nowhere or the pipeline to nowhere, the diploma to nowhere.
It's something that doesn't help you.
何かにto whereをつけると、役に立たないもの、というのを言い表せます。
輸送や自分を動かすものである必要は実際にはありません。
ネットを調べるとありとあらゆるものが出てきます。
the fuel to nowhere / the pipeline to nowhere / the diploma to nowhere など。
役立たずなものです。

in the middle of nowhere 何もない所

"Cover" is a verb you can often use to talk about paying for something.
You can cover the cost, you can cover a bill.
The same word is used in insurance.
Does your insurance cover your costs for medical care, or getting your car repaired, for example?
coverは、何かを支払う際によく使う動詞です。
費用とか、感情とかを支払う、という意味です。
同じ言葉が保険にも使えます。
あなたの保険は、医療費をcoverしていますか？とか車の修理代をcoverしてますか？とか。

Yeah, that can be pretty irritating especially if you are in a rush.
If you weren't able to have enough time between flights.
Another thing that really annoys me is "customs and immigration",
because I don't mind them asking questions so much. They're doing the right job.
But it seems like there's often not enough people processing travelers.
We came from Mexico once through Houston.
Hundreds, hundreds and hundreds, probably thousands of people were in line trying to get through.
Luckily, we were coming into the U.S., and I'm a U.S. citizen,
and my husband could come with me, because we were married.
But it still took us probably an hour to get through.
そうですね。とてもいらつくでしょうね。特にラッシュの場合には。
便と便の間の時間が十分にとれない場合とか。
他にいらつくのは、入局移民局ですね。
彼らが質問をいろいろするのはいいんです。それが仕事ですしね。
でも、あれだけの旅行者をさばくには人数が少なすぎるような気がします。
私たちはかつてHouston経由でMexicoから入国しました。
何百いや何千もの人たちが列に並んでそこを通り抜けようとしていました。
幸運にもアメリカ市民である私は入国することができました。夫も。結婚してますからね。
でも、それでも通り抜けるのに１時間かかりました。

Okay, how did you come to begin learning English and liking to speak it?
英語を学ぶようになったきっかけは何ですか？

Well, my first opportunity to feel English was the Beatles.
最初に英語を感じたのはビートルズでした。

Okay, Yeah.

A song called "Hey Jude". I guess everybody knows "Hey Jude". Hey Jude という曲です。

Oh. Oh yeah. ああ。そうですか。

Well, I heard that song during lunchtime in elementary school.小学校の給食時間に。

In elementary school?小学校ですか？

Yeah.

Then I asked my mother to buy a record. And everything started.
それで母親にレコードをねだって。そこから始まりました。

Okay.

I used to sing Beatles' songs every day without understanding the meanings.
意味もわからずビートルズの歌を歌ってました。


And you didn't even understand the words when you're singing them. Right?
So I guess maybe it still helps just to repeat.
But, what other things you think effective for studying English?
英語の歌の場合は語句も理解できないでしょう。
繰り返しが役立ちますね。
英語学習に効果的な方法は他に何がありますか？

I think the most effective way of studying English is to speak English.
効果的なのは、口に出すことですね。

Ah huh.

When you read a book written in English, speak up the words.
When you listen to a song, sing together.
英語で書かれている本は、声に出して読む。
歌を聞くときには、一緒に歌う。

Now I think you've got a really great accent.
So part of it's gotta be due to speaking out loud like that.
But you also were overseas for a bit,
発音がいいですね。音読の成果でしょうけど。
海外にもいらしたんですよね。

Yes.

Right? In high school, was it? Can you tell us about that?高校生の頃でしたっけ？

Yes. Well, when I was a senior in high school.高３でした。
That was my first experience to be in the States.アメリカに最初に行ったのは。

Where in the States were you?アメリカのどこでしたか？

Utah.ユタです。

In Utah? Okay. Yeah.ユタ州ですか。

Nothing was there...cows. 牛だけのところでした。

Cows, yeah.

Then, I just stayed and enjoyed my teenager life over there.そこでティーネージャーの生活を楽しみました。

Ah huh.

You know, teenager life in Japan and the one in the U.S. are completely different.
日本のティーネージャーとアメリカのそれとでは全く違います。

How so?どんな風に？

You know, you know some...
Teenagers in the U.S. have fun. アメリカのティーネージャーは楽しむ。

Okay.

Right? Teenagers in Japan have pain.日本のティーネージャーは苦しむ。

You know, wanted to have a brief break before the full preparation for college entrance examination.
大学に入試の準備のための束の間の休息をとりたかったんです。。

I see. That's fair.なるほどね。

So that was one year that you spent overseas in high school.
Well, of course, I know that you spent more time overseas.
But from all that experience put together, do you have any adivice how Japanese can sound intelligent,
you know, when speaking in English?
高校の時１年間、海外ですごされましたね。
他にもすごされましたかね。
そういった経験を通じて、日本人が知的に思えるようなアドバイスとかありますか？

Yes. I think there are three points. One is あいづち.
So for example, if you say "I like fish", and usually we go, "Me too".
"Me too" is not enough, like, you would like to say, "So do I".
あいづちですね。同意を示す場合には、Me too.とか。それで不十分な場合は、So do I. とかね。

Different variations, a bit, that it doesn't sound so simple,
like you're really paying attention to other person there saying.
いろんな言い方がありますね。でもそう簡単には響きません。
他の人の言っていることに感心を払っているように思えます。

The second one is singular and plural.２番目に単数形と複数形です。

Okay.

You know, one thing, you know, you use "fish". Fish is one, like you don't say, "lots of fishes".
Right? It sounds you're a little kid. Say "lots of fish". All right?
そうですね。fishは単複同型ですものね。lots of fishesというと幼く響きます。lots of fishと言わないとね。

The third one is tense.３番目が時制です。

How verbs are conjugated, yeah.動詞との関連ですね。

Yeah, there's no present perfect tense in Japanese.日本語には現在完了なんてないですから。

Like... I have done so...I have eaten fish...or something like that?
それは　have done so とか　have eaten fish　みたいなものですよね。

Yes, yeah.

That's right. Everybody, good luck. Study hard.そうでね。みなさん、一生懸命勉強してください。

Now you've experienced many different industries.
Why did you end up going to a foreign capital firm, to begin with?
いろんな産業を経験されてきていますね。
まず第一に外資系の会社に落ち着かれた理由は何でしょうか？

Well, when I graduated from college, I just wanted to join Japan Racing Association-J.R.A.
大学を出た時には、JRAに就職したかったんです。

Okay.

At that time, it just started international race named Japan Cup.
I wanted to participate into planning of that race, international race.
Japan Cupが始まったばかりで、そういった国際レースに携わりたかったんです。

Ah huh.

And their international strategy.それとか国際戦略とかにも。

Ah huh.

But unfortunately, at the last interview, I failed. でも最終面接で不合格になってしまいました。

No... Oh...

So sad.
So, you know, it was like an accident, you know, to see the job advertisement of North East Airlines
at school.
それで、偶然、大学で、North East Airlineの求人広告を目にしたんです。

I see.

I just requested the interview. And they offered me a job.面接をお願いして、採用されました。

And I guess it worked out pretty well.
I mean you had a pretty varied career as I just mentioned.
Can you tell us a little bit about the different companies that you worked for?
とてもうまくいったようですね。
いろんな仕事をされてきていますね。
今までにお勤めになった様々な会社について少し教えていただけませんか？

Ah, I've worked for Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, and DELL. Goldman Sachs、Microsoft、DELLで働きました。

Wow! All really blue chip companies. 全部優良企業ばかりじゃありませんか。

Like I am.私みたいでしょ。

How did you make these changes to all these different companies?
こういった様々な会社にどうやって移られたんですか？

Well, I went to business school.ビジネススクールに行きました。

So that's why I could join Goldman Sachs.それで、Goldman Sachsに入社したんです。

Okay.

After Goldman Sachs, usually a recruiting agent like yourself, Jason.
その後は、通常、Jasonさんみたいなヘッドハンターからですね。

So wow! 'Cause you made all these moves through recruiters.
How did they contact you?
ヘッドハンターからですか？どのように接触してくるんですか？

Well, usually by e-mail.通常はメールですね。

Ah huh.

Or via phone.それから電話です。

Really? I've been in this business a long time.
How do you decide who's a good recruiter and who's not so good?
ほんとうですか？私はこの業界に長いのですが。
ヘッドハンターが優秀かそうでないかはどう見分けるんですか？

Well, I would to have a person like.. who listens to me very well, and who tries to find the best much.
そうですね。こんな人です。つまり私の話をよく聞いてくれる人。そしてベストマッチを探してくれるような人ですね。
