Medical checkup

Last week I went through an annual medical checkup. All the examined items resulted in "normal". Good news is that low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol came down to below a warning level. For almost ten years it had persistently kept above the warning value. It had been mostly constant but never shown a sign of decrease for whatever I did, from avoiding eating fatty meat, to skipping lunch, to walking ten thousand steps a day. The significant drop in this "bad" cholesterol is, therefore, obviously due to my daily running.

This was not what I intended. My dream of running at the Tokyo City Marathon ended up in smoke, but I did not imagine it was made up this way. Taking up jogging is now rewarded.

On writing

Not having written here just for a few days what with my report and everything else, I find it already hard to get myself back to the habit of writing. But once I begin writing here, I wonder what it was all about.

In my head, much knowledge regarding English grammar, idioms, vocabulary and all accumulates almost collecting dust. They are all waiting to be used. If you didn't use what you have acquired, it would be like unspent money you saved all your life when you depart this life.

Learning is something like saving money. If you like savings you also like learning for no special reasons. You are only "saving" your knowledge. If you like spending, you place more importance on using what you have learned. Perhaps you are somewhere between the two extremes.

If I were asked which side is more important, I'd say using is. To use is to live. To learn is just to prepare for living. So after a certain period of learning you must have a period of application. This is what learning is for. But in the course of application, you would be painfully aware that you should have learned more. It is the time for learning again. This way we live circling a spiral upward.

I am writing and using now. This motivates my reading and learning, turning them into life itself.

A veil

Seven out of ten.

This was the number of people sitting in front of me in a train who were looking into a small screen of their cellphone. Three days ago, without having nothing to do in a train, I observed those people. A young business man was smirking perhaps reading an email perhaps from his girlfriend, from time to time picking his nose. A middle-aged lady was pressing the keys oblivious to the world. A mother was half writing an email and half scolding her son who constantly annoyed her by asking her to let him press the keys of her cellphone. A school boy sitting beside me was frantically shooting something falling from the sky on the screen by pressing the buttons with professional skill and incredible speed.

The other day when I went to a restaurant, there was a group of 5 high-school girls sitting at a table. They seemed to have finished their lunch. What was special about them was...all of them were looking into their cellphones without any conversation at all. For ten minutes or so until one of them said "it is about time", they did not utter even a word. What on earth is it? They were lost in communicating with someone in a remote place in the form of letters and characters while they have many friends to talk to sitting whispering-distance away.

I don't know any medium that changed our life styles more than cellphones and emails. Like other new things it can be good and bad. But I feel that it is another veil, very thick one, that covers the reality.

Gravity, Love, God

Things fall, of course by the gravity. But have you ever seen the gravity? No, you haven't. All you can see is that things fall. So the gravity is just a concept you believe in. Why you believe in it? Because it seems to explain the behavior of the things beautifully. In this way you believe in so many things that you cannot see.

Love is one of such kind of things. You cannot see love itself. You can only imagine someone loves you from what she did for you, how she smiled at you, how he whispered "love" at your ear... It may be an illusion or reality, you are not sure.

Like gravity, "love" is something you believe in. You wish it to be proven in the course of your life, but what you would like to believe as love will forever remains as... at best circumstantial evidence. So you need to keep your faith. Without the faith your love may slip through your fingers. Love is such elusive...entity if I can call it.

Like love, God is something you have to believe in... in the first place. You cannot see Him of course. But...when you are walking in the dark forest in a shrine early in the morning, when you are hearing your heartbeat in jogging, when you look down all the jewelry of townlights from a soaring gondola, and... perhaps at your death bed..., you may feel, just feel, He is with you. If you are a child of Him, you are a child of Him whether you are aware of it or not. It is the problem of yourself and not His.

We need to have faith. Without the faith we are just helpless, deserted and isolated from all the world of integrity and harmony. God, love, and gravity. we may be searching for the same thing with different names.

Winter

Night air was unexpectedly cold, It tightened up my skin immediately after I got out of the door. I ran down the slope in front of my house, running for a while to a hill and then ran up the hill at one stretch so that I could warm up my body quicker.

Up on the hill the street was empty. Under white street lamps, it looked surreal.... like one scene in a black-and-white film I saw sometime somewhere. I kept running with a white half moon glowing bright in the bleak, clear sky. My body was gradually warming up. Kept running for 20 minutes and came home without much perspiration.

It has become a good season for running before I was aware of it. The winter has come at last.
