Simpsons Poke Fun at Apple
The Simpsons poke fun at Apple.
I only enjoyed “Flay him with your earbuds!” though. The rest wasn’t that funny. How come there wasn’t anything like the recent “Student Writes to Steve Jobs, Gets Free Final Cut Studio 2″ incident, or the “John Mayer Here” advantage. ^^.

OYKOT Flyer
OYKOT is what happens when art, advertising and business collide.
Wieden+Kennedy Tokyo is not ‘just a typical ad agency’. It is full of curiosity and constantly seeks to find a better way. A new way. Ten years of embracing the fusion of culture and commerce has allowed for the OYKOT perspective to emerge. Sometimes the answer comes from a voice within, other times it’s the spark from an outside collaborator. It’s okay to not always have the answer. Sometimes it takes digging. That’s when some of the most surprising work comes.
W+K Tokyo is in a unique position of experiencing Tokyo from the outside and observing Tokyo from the inside. Its distinct background has helped breed a hybrid approach to the creative process, continuously challenging the traditional notions of advertising. A message can be delivered through an exciting new track by a DJ, a downloadable port cutlet, or by flying people with balloons.
OYKOT takes an active choice to engage and define what Tokyo means right now. We invite you to take a look at the people, the process, and the groove that go into making the work. How we see Tokyo. How we see the world.
W+K were behind the Google Dekiru promotion a while back. That was when I flew. They will be at the GGG (Ginza Graphic Gallery) from tomorrow (2nd December) till Christmas Eve. There’s even an opening party tomorrow evening. If you’re in Japan and happen to drop by, I’ll see you there. ^^.

Snail Mail
It’s the first of December. When was the last time you sent out a proper handwritten letter?
I used to exchange letters with friends a couple of years ago. Actually, come to think of it, all these friends were mostly girls. ^^. It started in high school. I had this “pen-pal” from another class. We would leave neatly folded letters on each other’s desk in school. All that sneaking around trying to look for an opportunity to place the letter was fun. Especially so since we were in different classes.
When I went to study in Sydney, we still exchanged letters. Although it was not as frequent. I remember going down to the post office and buying a pack of 5 aerogrammes. It was about that time I started writing to a few other friends too; didn’t know what to do with the remaining aerogrammes. This continued for a while until… it was either the rise of emails or just me getting lazy. Probably the letter. ^^.
So, writing letters slowly evolved to typing emails. Slowly because
1) Back then, the only place you can type out an email is infront of a computer connected to the internet. Those hotmail glory days.
2) I hated the *beeee puuuuuu errrrr* sound of the 56k modem.
3) Nothing beats visiting the post office with a big parcel inbetween both hands.
Technology these days let us type out emails anywhere with our keitai-s. In Japan, hop onto a train or a bus and it’s commonplace to see many people typing away on their phones. Actually, Japan is ahead of everyone else in terms of mobile email usage because they started off with using emails and not SMS on their phones. I prefer using SMS for short, subjectless messages like “just around the corner. there in 2 minutes.”. And I really appreciate how Apple displays SMSes on my iPhone; a chat window.
I do type out emails on the go too. I also enjoy the fact that my mail accounts are synced between my iPhone and my Macs; I could type out half a mail on the phone and finish and send it later on the computer, or vice versa. It has become part of my lifestyle.
I believe with consumer technology, the lifestyle element is pretty important. Find it, exploit it and you’ve got yourself a hit.
Email pen-pal? It’s too easy to turn an email exchange into an email chat; and it’s even easier to just ask for the IM username and chat away. That’s why, I don’t keep an email pen-pal. Unless it’s a snail mail exchange, I find it rather difficult to keep the feelings of anticipation and surprise high.
It’s 30 more days to the New Year. Ever since I’ve been in Japan, I’ve embraced the Japanese custom of sending out New Year Postcards. While most people mass print them from the computer or customize a rubber stamp and stamp away, I still like to handwrite my new year postcards. I don’t like to be too generic, so I do spend time thinking of what to write. Usually I tend to sneak in a short personal message too. Sending new year greetings to friends-only makes it easier. ^^. Call me old-fashioned, but there’s an element of sincerity in handwritten new year greetings which I would like to give out to my friends for the coming new year… that and a postcard with horrible handwriting. ^^.
That reminds me, I’ve got to start working on my New Year Postcard design!
When was the last time you sent out a handwritten letter?

Shopping for a Humidifier
Went shopping for a humidifier recently. There are only a few places to go for home appliances in Japan. Yodobashi is my favourite hangout. I like the service there… not to mention, I’ve got lots of points too.
Winter is here and the air is rather dry. Heaters and humidifiers are the “in” thing. Yodobashi has also gone to great lengths in creating this “which humidifier is you” guide to help you part with your ¥¥¥. Basically there are 4 types of humidifiers. From left to right - steam, hybrid, heater-less, ultrasonic. The yellow row “Point” (ポイント) goes from left to right again - recommended for bedroom, popular choice, safe, quiet. Don’t think I need to translate the other pros and cons… do I? Anyone interested?
I decided on getting this Electrolux beast of a humidifier. It’s a hybrid (ultrasonic and steam). Costs about ¥200 to ¥600 per month to operate. It was listed in one of the 3 decision points next to the price. Wished I took a clearer picture.
First point was “hybrid humidifier”. Second was the serviceable room size and third, the monthly operating costs. Great info don’t you think?
My 2 cents. Minimalist design and dead simple controls (just 2 knobs!). Love it.

Shaolin Girls
First we had shaolin soccer the movie. Then there was shaolin soccer the tv series. Not wanting to miss out on the shaolin frenzy, Japan came out with 2 shaolin movies of her own. Saw these 2 dvds for rental at the local Tsutaya store.
Shaolin young lady (少林少女), syourinsyoujyo.
and shaolin old lady (少林老女), syourinbaba.
Disregarding the fact that shaolin temple is historically a guys-only monastery, which one would you be more inclined to watch?

Exclusive Potato from Hokkaido
At this little shop in Otaru, I ran into the ever exclusive Jyagapokkuru. じゃがポックル。
It’s a pack of potato strips. Premium potato strips from a famous potato farm in Hokkaido. It was really really difficult to find this snack. It was sold out everywhere else.
Stock probably just came in as it was still early in the morning. The early tourist grabs the exclusive potato! I don’t think their supplies will last through the day. ^^. I had friends returning from Hokkaido disappointed because they could not get their hands on a pack of jyagapokkuru. Although it’s also available at the airport, I’ve heard horror stories about people queuing up hours for it… ok.. maybe hours is a little exaggerated.
¥840 a pack. One pack per customer. It is quite tasty. Has a very rich and full potato taste and texture. If you’re ever in Hokkaido, this should be one of those snacks that should go back with you. Just to name a few, others probably being 白い恋人 (white lover), 生キャラメル (candy made from fresh caramel cream) etc. If you can, local produce like vegetables and seafood are also good souvenirs. ^^.
There were also 2 different sets available. For people who want more. Of course, you get other stuff in it as well. This set includes one jyagapokkuru and 2 packs of hot potato soup. Limited to 2 sets per customer.
This set comes with 2 jyagapokkuru, a pack of hot potato soup and a pack of jyagariko.
I only made it back with 1 ¥840 pack.
The shop is conveniently named Otaru-ya (小樽屋), near the popular canal in Otaru.
Here it is on the map!

eneloop kairo
Winter is cold. Kairo keeps you warm. Eneloop powers kairo. Let’s kairo~u~!
This is the personal warmer put out by Sanyo (they were taken over by Panasonic recently). Although you are supposed to use it with their eneloop rechargeable batteries, I’m pretty sure any other rechargeable batteries in it will work just fine. Rechargeable batteries have been around for ages. I reckon Sanyo did a great job repackaging/rebranding it.
I bought it because I was curious about how it works and if it was any good. It could be cheaper. ¥5000 was expensive. ¥5000 gets you the model with replaceable batteries. There is another ¥3000 version that comes with a built-in battery. I read the cheaper version is only good for 300-500 charges. Decided against it since I had some eneloop batteries at home.
Well, it works. A near instant hot pocket for just about any cold occasion. A full charge gets you about 5 hours of heat on low and 4 hours on high. There’s also a turbo mode, which should result in a shorter lifespan.
There’s also the cheaper, traditional “analog” version. Just tear open the packet, shake it a little and it magically warms up. You can’t control the heat though. No 2 levels of heat, no turbo mode and no turning it off. What can expect for a few hundred yen.

Weekly Photos from my iPhone 3
Yeap, it’s the time of the week again. The weekly iPhone photo dump. Actually, it’s been quite a while since the last time I did this. Weekly is misleading, but let’s keep it that way. ^^.
Had this donburi for dinner in Ikebukuro. I think this restaurant was in SPICE, a restaurant level on the top of the Tobu department store.
It had a nice view of the station beneath.
I went to watch another boxing match again. Will blog about it later. But this time, I was there because there was an exhibition match at the end; an 親父 (oyaji, old man) fight. A friend of mine (50+) was one of the boxers. Impossible is nothing!
What do you do when you have a clogged sink? Came home with this little gadget after a visit to the local DIY store. Have never seen this before that day. My first experience at using it went pretty well. Cleared the pipe in no time at all. Nothing much to it. Just have to push it in… and out… and in again… that sounds weird. ^^.
I always wonder why these toilet seat replacements are so darn expensive. I can live without the washlet and blow dryer down below, but a warm seat for winter would be nice.
Willy Wonka chocolates. I only want the one with a golden ticket inside.
The next few photos show some common drinks in Japan. PET bottles, coffee cans etc. Starbucks coffee comes in cans now.
Green tea. Lots of different flavours.
Pepsi Nex and C.C. Lemon. I don’t drink Pepsi; more of a Coke guy.
Silky Black Boss. Coffee.
Non-green teas. ^^.
Royal Lipton Milk Tea. Sweet and yummy.
Boss milk coffee. Do you drink coffee? Many cups a day? I don’t have coffee daily. Only once in a while.
These fruit juices comes in nice cans. Love grapefruit juice. Especially the pink kind.
We guys are too macho for yogurt drinks. ^^. Hence the need for “Guy’s yogurt drink”.
Guy’s sour plums. ^^.
And guy’s cream bread. ^^.
男 (Otoko) is a quite the fashionable kanji right now. ^^.
